Service Line Verification

Ensuring a Lead Free Racine

Removing all lead from Racine’s water service lines is a top priority for the EquiFlow Lead-Free Program. To guarantee safe drinking water, the City of Racine and EquiFlow must verify the material of every service line from the city’s curb stop to your water meter. Many private service lines lack documentation, meaning unknown lead pipes still exist. Your participation helps confirm and replace any lead components.

Why Service Line Verification Matters

EquiFlow and the City of Racine are working to remove lead service lines in the next few years. Verifying each service line ensures no property is overlooked.

We use historical records, inspections, and occasional excavations to identify lead and galvanized pipes. Even if your line was previously replaced, verification is key to ensuring citywide safety. If you haven’t verified your service line, we encourage you to self-verify or schedule an appointment.

I Have a Lead Service Line—Now What?

If you've discovered that your home has a lead service line, don’t worry—you have options to ensure your drinking water is safe while you wait for replacement. Here’s what you can do:

What you can do:
1. Reduce Your Exposure to Lead
Protect your household by following these steps:
  • Flush Your Taps – If water hasn’t been used for several hours, run the tap for 1-2 minutes until it becomes noticeably colder before using it for drinking or cooking.
  • Use Cold Water for Drinking & Cooking –  Always use cold water for drinking, cooking, or making baby formula. Hot water is more likely to contain higher levels of lead.
  • Clean Faucet Aerators – Periodically clean the small screen (aerator) at the end of your faucets to remove any debris, which may contain lead particles.
  • Consider Using a Certified Water Filter – A NSF/ANSI Standard 53 certified filter is highly recommended, especially for households with pregnant individuals or young children. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance and replacement.
  • Avoid Boiling Water to Remove Lead – Boiling water does not remove lead and can actually increase lead levels as water evaporates.
  • Be Mindful of Construction or Repairs – Water main work or plumbing repairs can temporarily increase lead levels. Flush your taps thoroughly after such work to remove any dislodged lead particles.
  • Get Your Water Tested – Visit our official partner, US Water,  for professional water testing and guidance. Learn more about water testing.
2. Register for Lead Service Line Replacement
EquiFlow and the City of Racine are working to replace all lead service lines. Here’s how to check your status and get on the replacement list:
  • Schedule construction for 2026 – If your home is in an upcoming project zone, make sure you’re registered for replacement. Sign up now.
  • Sign a Right of Entry (ROE) form – This grants permission for EquiFlow crews to replace your service line at no cost.
  • Contact us for more details – If you're unsure about your replacement timeline, reach out to our team. Contact us.
3. Learn More About Lead & Your Health
Lead exposure can have serious health effects, particularly for young children and pregnant women. Visit trusted sources like the CDC and EPA to learn more.
